PUC Services Inc. operates multiple utilities within and around the City of Sault Ste. Marie, including the distribution of electricity, the supply, treatment and distribution of municipal drinking water, and the operation of wastewater treatment facilities.

Reporting to the Manager, Safety, the Supervisor, Safety & Environment will lead and manage the development and implementation of effective health and safety programs and training initiatives.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement safety policies and procedures to ensure compliance with local, provincial, and federal regulations and industry standards.
  • Conduct regular inspections and audits of the workplace to identify potential hazards, assess risks, and ensure compliance with safety standards.
  • Supervise the work environment, ensuring strict adherence to health and safety legislation, regulations, and corporate policies and programs.
  • Monitor health and safety compliance through workplace inspections and crew observations and initiates corrective action.
  • Investigates incidents to identify causes and develop strategies to prevent reoccurrence.
  • Ability to travel frequently to remote locations to provide Health and Safety expertise.
  • Assist in the development of corporate policies related to Health and Safety.

Qualifications:

  • Possession of a post-secondary degree or diploma in Health and Safety, Environment or a related field with professional designation or certification as a safety professional.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must hold and maintain a valid Ontario driver’s license.
  • Knowledge of hazard identification and risk assessment process is a requirement.
  • Working knowledge of water and electrical utility industry inclusive of all related codes and regulations.
  • Familiarity with applicable environmental legislation would be considered an asset.
  • Excellent interpersonal, administrative, and analytical skills.
  • Exceptional communication abilities, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to foster a culture of safety.
  • Strong analytical and technical skills to solve complex technical problems.
