PUC Services Inc. (PUC) operates multiple utilities within and around the City of Sault Ste. Marie, including the supply, treatment and distribution of municipal drinking water, the supply of electricity, and the operation of wastewater treatment facilities.

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Director, Water Operations will provide strategic direction and support for water operations at PUC and its affiliate companies, while maintaining compliance with all legislative and regulatory requirements.  

Responsibilities:

  • Provides strategic direction and leadership throughout water operations, including Water Treatment, Water Distribution, Environmental Operations and Engineering.
  • Ensures the production and delivery of safe drinking water and oversees the construction, operations and maintenance of the water production and distribution systems with particular attention to the quality, capacity, reliability and efficiency.
  • Ensures compliance with legislation, codes, and regulatory matters inclusive of the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks, as well as adherence to the Drinking Water Quality Management Standard.
  • Ensures effective safety protocols are implemented and maintained throughout water operations for employees, contractors, customers, and visitor to the various facilities.  
  • Develops and oversees implementation of annual budgets as well as long term asset management plans to ensure long term sustainability.
  • Develops and maintains emergency and contingency plans by assessing risk and implementing mitigation strategies.
  • Integration of new business activities, ensuring targets for safety, cost control and quality of service are achieved.
  • Interacts with the public, Board of Directors, external agencies and authorities, municipal councils, suppliers, contractors and staff in a manner that results in positive outcomes.

 

Qualifications:

  • At minimum, post secondary degree in Engineering or a related field, with a Professional Engineering designation (P. Eng.) as an asset.
  • A minimum of ten (10) years of progressive and diversified experience in a leadership capacity in water operations, preferably in a municipal or utility environment.
  • Strong knowledge of related legislation, regulations, standards and practices.
  • Experience managing teams in a unionized environment.
  • Demonstrated business and financial management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively lead, influence, develop and mentor staff towards achieving corporate objectives and maintain effective relationships with stakeholders.
  • Ability to work in an environment that is fast paced, while being able to prioritize multiple, often competing priorities with a positive attitude.
  • Well-developed analytical, project management, organizational, time management, technical, and decision-making skills.
  • Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Office, SCADA, and experience with work management software.
  • Excellent written, oral and presentation skills.
  • Occasional travel is required within the territories of operation for PUC and its affiliate companies.
