Water Operations Co-op Students (3) (1 Year Contract)

Environmental Operations & Water Treatment Operations

PUC Services Inc. (PUC) operates multiple utilities within and around the City of Sault Ste. Marie, including the supply, treatment and distribution of municipal drinking water, the supply of electricity, and the operation of wastewater treatment facilities.

The Water Operations Co-op Student positions will support sustainability and succession planning for PUC by enabling work experience in Water Operations commensurate with Level 1 licencing and/or certification requirements. It is a great opportunity to gain valuable work experience at a reputable company while earning hours towards licencing.

As the Water Operations Co-op Student your duties will include:

  • Assist with and execute operating and related department work with supervision and/or guidance to deliver quality and reliable water and wastewater services to PUC customers
  • Assist operators in a variety of activities related to facilities, processes, equipment and systems to ensure that all is operating within established parameters
  • Shadow the lab technician and operators when they take, analyze and forward samples, as required to ensure regulatory compliance
  • Learn and assist with operation of plant processes, and associated tasks
  • Document accurate notes. Observe and work with the team to enter information into the log book, data excel sheets, SCADA changes, permits and tailboards
  • Maintain a safe working environment through cleaning of workplace, grounds, roads and pathways, and maintenance of tools and equipment
  • Assist operators when conducting checks, monitor, and calibrate equipment, and record usage
  • Utilize safe and proper handling methods of chemicals and processes to ensure compliance
  • Assist in collection, testing analysis and forward samples, as required to ensure facility compliance
  • All actions of the Water Operations Coop Student must be under guidance and direction of licensed Staff and Management as the OIC and ORO.

Qualifications:

  • Enrolled in Post-secondary diploma either in Water Resource Technology or Environmental Engineering Technology
  • Must hold and maintain a valid Water Treatment Operator in Training Certificate and/or Wastewater Treatment Operator in Training Certificate
  • Hold and maintain a valid Ontario driver’s license
  • Knowledge of basic mathematics and chemistry to make calculations regarding chemicals and process
  • Good oral and written communication skills to keep logs and complete reports
  • Ability and dexterity to work in confined spaces, dirty and noisy environment
  • Must be able to wear and function with an SCBA
