Job Description:

PUC Services Inc. operates multiple utilities within and around the City of Sault Ste. Marie, including the supply and delivery of electricity and drinking water, and energy services and the treatment of water and wastewater.

As the Laboratory Technician, your duties will include:

  • Maintain and operate all related equipment required for the operation of the Environmental Centre Laboratory (Wastewater Treatment Plants) in an efficient and safe manner;
  • Perform analysis such as, but not limited to, BOD, wet chemistry, solids, pH, phosphorus, TKN, alkalinity, VFA’s and microscopic examination;
  • The development of proper QA-QC to maintain sample integrity within the parameters of Standard Methods, as well as sample analysis documentation on computer;
  • Communicates and interacts with the public, government inspectors, contractors, staff and students;
  • Ability to be on-call on a scheduled basis for after-hours emergencies. 

Qualifications:

  • At minimum, a Community College diploma in chemical or biological technology with emphasis on analytical sampling and testing;
  • Must obtain and hold a valid Wastewater Treatment Operator Class 1 Certificate;
  • Must maintain a high level of compliance with the Certificate of Approval and MECP regulations and policies under the operating direction of PUC Services Inc.;
  • Good mechanical aptitude, and display good laboratory skills;
  • Self-motivated to work independent of other members and be able to organize tasks in an effective and efficient manner;
  • Possess both written and verbal communication skills as well as computer skills, in order to communicate technical information in a tactful and persuasive manner to both the internal and external customer;
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Ontario driver’s license;
  • Maintain all the necessary certificates and licenses to perform the functions associated with the position.
